Since the third edition of this book was published in 2019, we have witnessed an increasing uptake of business process management techniques in the enterprise software industry. Major vendors base their system  configurations on the business processes that are supported by those systems. But it is not only systems design where business processes have taken centre stage, but also process analytics in general and process mining in particular.
These developments have shaped the fourth edition of the BPM book. One can use processes to configure enterprise software systems only if there is a thorough understanding of the processes and the data objects involved, and of their relationships. To address those challenges, this edition extends the chapter on decisions with a framework that integrates data into business processes, both from a data model and from a data instance or data tuple perspective. Interestingly, this responds to a keynote speech at a BPM conference several years ago, which stated that processes and data are two sides of the same coin. I finally got it.
